If you haven't seen Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix, now is the time to break from this blog and your life and binge watch the first season. If you have then you'll know what I am talking about when I say that I was expecting Spirit Cycle with Tristafe.
"Be like a drunk girl getting out of a cab and leave everything behind!"
I actually used to Spin on a regular basis. I guess I liked it, but I wouldn't have gone at all if I didn't have someone counting on me to be there. And to be fair, I never went to a Spin class where the teacher was like Tristafe. But I was going to a Spin studio this time, and as such, I didn't know what to expect.
With mixed emotion, I must report there's no Trisafe at Cycle In at all... It was a simple and clean one room studio with about 15 - 20 bikes, two HD screens and a little prep area. The studio provided towels and caddies, which was much appreciated, and the teacher (who I believe is the owner) welcomed me and showed me the cycle basics. The room filled up, and we cycled.
The cycling was a combo of sprints and climbs, of which I noted that like Miley Cyrus, I enjoy the climb much better than the sprint. The music videos made all the difference. I can't imagine doing this for an hour with out some distraction. As an aside, I wish MTV would show videos again. It's a real shame that you just can't turn on MTV or VH1 and let the videos roll all day. Jason DeRulo kicked off my spin, which made me so happy. I'm a huge fan. I know, I know. Wiggle? Really? Yes. It's a dirty secret.
About 30 minutes in, I felt the bile push up into my throat. I think it was probably the coffee I chugged before the class, but, Taylor Swift told me to Shake It Off, so I did. I made it through an hour of Spin, burned approximately 400 calories, and started the my Saturday feeling accomplished. Win.
Loved: The trainer's willingness to teach, the cleanliness and intimacy of the studio, videos, the pace, the climbs, how my butt felt, and the ability to improve incrimentally.
Hated: My feet hurt (need the right shoes), my arm hurt (leaned too much), Gangam Style was played, the saddle sting,
Verdict: Might have felt a spark
However, Tristafe's Soul Cycle aside, I hope I don't offend when I say Spin still seems like a soulless activity. What I mean by that is that for me, I could never have long term passion for Spin. That's just me. I was in awe that the trainer/owner has so much passion, she teaches about 2-3 classes a day and quit her day job to own a studio. Kudos to passion. I'm digging in for that passion.
